Book of Madness! PREORDER

Preorders are now available from select retailers:

The Book of Madness does not simply contain fear of the unknowable things in the void-it cultivates it. Its pages do not rest. They breathe. They wait. They remember. Every word etched within it gnaws at the fragile boundary between knowing and unraveling, pulling at threads that were never meant to be touched. It does not teach, it reveals-and what it reveals is not meant for anything that still hopes to remain whole. You stare into the void, and the void stares back.

M.O.T.H.E.R. now available through Ingram Spark

Great News! M.O.T.H.E.R. is the first M Presents Publishing book available through Ingram Spark book distribution. This means that it will be easier to find print books of this title online and, if you choose to see it on shelves, your local bookstore will be easily able to order copies. It is a longer process on my end to get the book ready this way but I hope this expanded distribution will be beneficial to all M Presents authors!

You can order your own print copy directly from Ingram Spark at the link I've included.

On October 5th, you will be able to buy the paperback from Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Liminal Madness Progress

LIMINAL MADNESS IS PROCEEDING AS PLANNED

I finished choosing the stories to be published in Liminal Madness. Accepted authors have been contacted and the Author page on this website is slowly being updated. As expected, the number of stories warrants the release of a second anthology. That second anthology, tentatively titled 'Consuming Madness', looks to be roughly the same length and (while still liminal) leans more toward fear and paranoia.

I confess that I'm excited by all of the stories, from those that are liminal in the popular sense, to liminal in the traditional sense, to stories of fear. To the point that I'm excited to share these stories as soon as possible. With that in mind, I intend to release both books as soon as possible. The plan is to release the digital version of both before Halloween (with 'Liminal Madness' released first) and, at least, 'Liminal Madness available as a physical book before the greatest holiday in horror circles.

With that in mind, what do the visitors to this website (and other M Presents social media platforms) think about the title of the second anthology? Can you suggest a better title? While I prefer the title contains the word Madness, that's not necessary if a better title can be created. Comment on this post and let me know if you have a better title idea, and I'll credit whoever comes up with a great title with an "associated editor" published in the finished book!

Stay tuned for future updates!

ORGANIZING YOUR BOOK LAUNCH

While M Presents will do the heavy lifting for its clients, it's good for everyone to have a basic understanding of the publishing process to avoid any delay that might come your way. If you're prepared, you can avoid some common things that will slow or might even hinder your ability to release your book at your expected time.

You MIGHT think everything from your book files to your website are ready to go; but even the most prepared authors hit unexpected snags. Sometimes we can prevent them, and sometimes they're out of our control. For example, this website had been working perfectly until about 2 months ago when a hacker attacker the domain hosting service. Nothing was compromised, but I wasn't notified about it and only learned of the security weakness when I tried to visit the website as most potential clients and saw a security warning rather than this website!

I added additional security which will hopefully make this website behave better, but I'll have to wait and see. It could've been worse; my previous website (which is no longer active) was attacked by a spam bot and clicking on the website launched hundreds of porn ads on your computer!

In short: be prepared for the delays. You shouldn't travel without some sort of time buffer, and you shouldn't risk running into problems.

Step One: Your publication date

Many websites allow you to offer pre-sales up to 1 year in advance; which you should take advantage of. Schedule your book at least a week later than anticipated in the event that problems occur. Because they most likely will (especially the ones out of your control; I've been waiting almost a year after publication for 'Madness By Firelight' to be available via all retailers but one is so backed up that they still list it as "pending", even though all of the other retailers have approved it and are listing it.

Everything else revolves around your planned publication date; so it's best to know this date first to give yourself a sort of deadline. Remember, it's not unusual these days for a digital copy to be released one week or earlier than print and audio, so don't feel too stressed if you miss some of these deadlines. Remember, they're suggestions. Still, I don't know about you, but I work better with deadlines.

Step Two: Timeline

This timeline lists when deadlines should be COMPLETED.

One day prior to publication date

  • Prepare an online post/video to be released the same day as your publication.

Two weeks prior to publication date (your absolute busiest day!)

  • Audiobook file(s) uploaded  and finalized (if you intend to release an audio book at the same time as the print book)
  • Finalize Print Book cover (this can only really be done once you've approved the print file. Professional cover artists can take days, if not weeks, to create so be sure to take that into account or be prepared to pay additional "rush" fees to the artist)
  • Finalize Print file (some retailers allow you to finalize a digital proof; but I recommend getting a physical proof when you can. At this point, however, you'd only have time to approve a digital proof)
  • Upload ebook files for quality checks (this can, in itself, take a few days to complete. Make sure to do this, and that all of the files are approved; if the upload encounters a problem, you've allowed yourself enough time to make necessary changes)

Five weeks prior to publication

  • Order your physical proof. Expect it to take 10-15 days for a physical proof to be printed and shipped to you for your approval. Quickly read it and check for mistakes. Depending on how long this takes, you may not have enough time to finalize a second physical proof so make sure the quality is up to your standards and make all necessary changes.

Six weeks prior to publication

  • Audio files are completed. Not everyone wants to release an audio book at the same time as print, but if you do, you should have all the files completed by the audio producer.

Book deals

I don't want to go into too many details but I'm working to negotiate a couple of book details. I'm not going to say any details in the event one or both of these fall thru, but take my word that they are both prospectively exciting. Oh, and I have some great news coming up! Nothing to do with politics (I really hope) but...something.

Book covers

You've written your manuscript and edited to your satisfaction, and now you wish to publish. While M Presents Publishing is usually open to novels, perhaps you want to publish it yourself and you want to absorb all of the costs and maintain all creative control.
At M Presents Publishing, I believe authors should absolutely have a measure of creative control. Let me handle some of the stuff, like finding a competent editor, and getting a few covers to choose from that I feel is appropriate; you can worry about selling and writing your next great manuscript, we both win.
Ok, with my sales pitch out of the way, here's my advice for the day: the cover.  Most authors know that a superb book cover image is critically important. It’s the first impression that your prospective readers will have of you as a professional author and brand. Within a fraction of a second, your cover either draws a reader in or turns them away.

What Makes a Book Cover the Best?

The best book covers aren’t just beautiful—they’re strategic. A cover should be designed to attract readers in two seemingly contradictory ways: Broad appeal and targeted appeal:

  • Broad appeal - It should be eye-catching and stand out on a bookshelf or digital storefront.
  • Targeted appeal - It should immediately signal to your target readers that this book is for them.

Broad Appeal: Making Your Cover Stand Out
A strong book cover should grab attention, even at a glance. In a sea of books, your cover needs to be visually striking enough to stop a reader from scrolling past. This means:
  • Using Bold, High-Contrast Imagery - A flat, washed-out cover is easy to ignore. Strong contrast helps a cover stand out in a digital store or on a crowded bookshelf.
  • Having a Clear Focal Point - The eye should be drawn immediately to the central element, whether that’s a character, a symbol, or a striking title treatment.
  • Readable Typography - If your title or author name is difficult to read at thumbnail size, the cover loses effectiveness.

Targeted Appeal: Speaking to the Right Readers
While broad appeal helps a cover stand out, targeted appeal ensures that the right readers are drawn in. This means your cover should align with the genre, tone, and themes of your book.
Sticking to genre conventions helps ensure that your book cover has broad appeal while also targeting the right readers. Think of genre conventions as visual shorthand to attract readers who enjoy your genre while filtering out those who might not.
You can determine genre conventions by:
  • Researching popular books - Browse bestseller lists on platforms like Amazon, Goodreads, and Barnes & Noble. Take note of the common elements in these covers.
  • Analyzing key elements - Look at color schemes, typography, imagery, and overall mood.
  • Regularly browsing your genre - Trends change, so staying updated on new releases ensures your cover remains competitive.
Following genre conventions makes it easier to attract the right audience. As I primarily publish horror, I'm going to stick there; however, scanning Amazon in other genres will give you an idea of what to do:
Horror utilizes stark contrasts, eerie imagery, and fonts that create an unsettling effect.

First Impressions Matter
Your book cover is often the only thing a potential reader sees before making a purchase decision. If the cover doesn’t immediately convey genre, tone, and professionalism, you risk losing the reader before they even read your blurb.

Avoid Common Cover Mistakes
  • Choosing a Cover That Misrepresents the Genre - If your book is a high-paced thriller, but your cover looks like a romance novel, readers will be confused, and you may end up with negative reviews from people expecting a completely different story. Don't let anyone fool you, a book is judged by its cover.
  • Overly Complicated Designs - A cluttered cover with too many elements can be overwhelming. The best covers use a simple, effective composition with one or two main focal points.
  • Unreadable Text - Tiny or overly decorative fonts may look stylish, but if the title isn’t immediately legible, the cover loses its effectiveness. Text that's too close to the cover's edges can also become unreadable. I recommend at least 1/2 inch of distance to either edge of the cover, but I also believe that you shouldn't restrict your book by sticking to my rule.
  • Ignoring the Thumbnail Factor - Most readers will first see your book as a small image in an online store. If it doesn’t stand out in thumbnail size, it won’t get clicks.

Ensuring Strong Composition: What Makes a Well-Designed Cover?
A well-designed premade cover will already have these factors accounted for, but it’s still important to analyze the design critically before purchasing. Look for:
  • A strong focal point - The central image or text should immediately draw the reader’s eye. Make the reader curious.
  • Balanced Layout – Elements should be arranged in a way that guides the eye naturally across the cover. The common convention is the 'Z' pattern with the title at the top of the cover and the author name/subtitle at the bottom. We tend to read left to right, the cover should emulate that.
  • Clear Text Placement – Title and author name should be positioned logically and remain easy to read. I know that I've released books with cover text at an angle, which was fine for a simple cover design, but it should be avoided.
  • Contrast and Color Use – Strong contrast makes key elements stand out, ensuring readability and impact. I recently talked to a client about her cover mistake, how pastel blue font on a navy blue background would be difficult to read; it wasn't something she'd considered before but it makes sense.
The "Close Enough" Rule
Many indie authors get stuck searching for a premade cover that perfectly matches every detail of their story. But the truth is, your cover doesn’t need to be 100% accurate—it just needs to sell the book.
Readers will pick up a book based on the overall appeal of the cover rather than its pinpoint accuracy. If a premade cover correctly captures the essence of your book and fits the genre, it’s likely a strong choice—even if minor details don’t match perfectly.

Finding the Right Balance
Choosing the best cover for your book is about balancing cost, accuracy, and marketability. A well-designed cover can save you time and money while ensuring your book looks professional and appeals to readers of your genre.
If you insist on getting a decent cover yourself, SelfPubBookCovers.com (SPBC) might be your answer, there are also numerous graphic designers seeking your business; shop around.

"All my tales are based on the fundamental premise that common human laws and interests and emotions have no validity or significance in the vast cosmos-at-large. To me there is nothing but puerility in a tale in which the human form—and the local human passions and conditions and standards—are depicted as native to other worlds or other universes. To achieve the essence of real externality, whether of time or space or dimension, one must forget that such things as organic life, good and evil, love and hate, and all such local attributes of a negligible and temporary race called mankind, have any existence at all. Only the human scenes and characters must have human qualities. These must be handled with unsparing realism, but when we cross the line to the boundless and hideous unknown we must remember to leave our humanity and terrestrialism at the threshold."
